As much as this stressed me out, the want to churn out as many coloured pieces as possible, I still really enjoyed it. Designing stuff has always interested me~ It was a very fun and enjoyable process!

Last week's class was mostly about colour theory. It was an interesting class. I realize that I do need to work more in colours.. And branching out to colours i rarely use. My art is usually pretty boring, colour-wise. I never experiment with lighting, which is not a good thing.

Other than that, we've started on our group project for Concept Design. Something I'm immensely looking forward to. My group consists of Sascha, Rahul, Curtis and Ben. We've pretty much decided to do our concept designs around the story The Skilful Huntsman. It's a pretty interesting story filled with mass murder, deceit, betrayal and the like. Fun times. ;)

We've decided to set it in the Steampunk era, where style is mostly of the Victorian era, but with steam powered mechanics making life easier for people. I've been researching mostly the steampunk subculture and fashions to look for character design ideas for our characters. I have noticed a number of interesting running things in the designs. Here they are:

- it's all about top hats and goggles
- things made of brass
- dental mirrors and extra lenses affixed to the sides of an old pair of glasses (idea!)
- early aviation
- pocket/chain watches
- braces for men
- gloves, telescopes, globes, world maps

Yeah, so it's been awhile since i've posted here.. Damnit. I keep forgetting. The past few weeks, we were brought through the process of layouts again. It was horrific. I did not really like it last semester when we did it, but we had to do it anyway. I guess it just gets easier the more I practice, which is something I should be doing. :( The pegs and stuff.. It confuses me.. And then there's colour coding and all that jazz now..

Field Guides:
16 Field is the largest used for TV
11 Field Long shot- full body
9 Field is used for close up’s on the face
10 Field mid shots (half body approx. .)
16 and 14 Field are used for crowd shots

We have also started on our animatic assignment, which means scene layouts, storyboarding and putting it all together in a final animatic to be submitted. I've done a few of these back in Singapore before, so I pretty much know how it would have to go. It is a pretty tedious process though..

Um.. At least i've read the script? ehehe.... >.>;

Apart from that, we've been seperated into our groups last week. I'm grouping with Sascha, Curtis and Rahul.. I don't know if I've got a 5th member in our group, but this should be interesting.. Guess we should start with picking out my Grimm's Fairy Tale, huh?

Script breakdowns this week.. We were sent home the week before with 2 scripts, Slither and Strangers on a Train to do our breakdowns. Here's the colour code for future reference.

CAST or CHARACTERS, HERO PARTS, SPEAKING PARTS - RED

This week's class was spent storyboarding the first few pages of the script of Tentacle, a horror movie about, well, tentacles, i guess.. haha! I really like doing this.. All the composition work and such that goes into the thought process of storyboards is like drawing one's own comic book. I like drawing comic books. :D

I used to have an online comic a few years ago, which I gave up on because life just got too busy.. But I recently found old pictures I drew of my characters and it sparked an interest to start it up again. Unfortunately, I lost the book that contained vital information of said characters somewhere back in Singapore.. Urgh. Guess that means i'll have to redo it all.. ahaha~ Then i'll be able to apply some of these compositional skills to it.. I'll seen when I have the time to do it again then! Should be heaps of fun.

Now, as we all know, CGI Modelling class is requiring us student to come up with a game design with characters and a setting and the whole shebang(not really, but close..) and well, my group decided to come up with an Ancient China style RPG game. I got down to designing the main character with Damien a few days ago and here're some of the process pictures of getting her character design to the final stage.

I just felt like posting here for the heck of it. I started thinking about this course and it's requirements and assignments and the like, which prompted this post. I have always been fascinated with concept art.. I really like designing characters and creatures as they pop up in my head at random moments.

I especially realized this when I was in the midst of my internship at a 3D animation company back in Singapore. I was initially stuck with the Animation team, not that it was a bad thing, but I was moved to the Concept/Pre-production team for a short while as they were short-staffed. Even though I had to stay back late, overnight even, to rush out a few posters and concepts that were needed, I really enjoyed my time there, as short-lived as it was... That really gave me an insight to what professional life was like, and hey, I actually really liked it!

After being moved back to the Animation team, I realized just how much I had enjoyed doing concept art compared to animation.. Of course, when I was in the Animation team, they stuck me with putting storyboards together and the basic 3D animatics.. I have to say I got to know 3DSMax pretty well in those few weeks... WAHAHA! I've probably forgotten it all now though. :(

This studio actually gave me a job offer for after I graduated from Polytechnic, which was a huge honour on my part. Sadly, they closed down a few months after my internship ended.. Lol. Talk about rotten luck! <3

Seeing as this is supposed to be a blog for Pre-production, I should start with the pre-production babble.

Anyway, first week, we were given a rundown on what we are going to be doing for the rest of the semester. After all that, we were shown funky clips of how to draw dinosaurs in situational scenes(which was immensely cool) and then told to go home to finish up a concept design on a 15th Century inn.

Do you know how difficult it is to find reference pictures of 15th Century inns? BLARGH! I did manage to find a few though, but they were mostly given a modern twist, so that sucked. Here are the thumbnails I came up with.. I am horrible at drawing rooms and background in general. Please forgive me. Orz

And now that all that is over, this week's class involved the how-to's of breaking down scripts. Colour-coding them and the like.. We'll be working on Slither, which is an awesome movie, and Strangers on a Train, which is a movie that's been on my to-watch list since forever.. Should be heaps of fun.

We were also shown an instructional video on matte-painting.. It was really cool and i wish i could paint backgrounds like that, but boy was that video boring. Ahaha!
